Abstract

Background Erectile dysfunction (ED) may be considered an indicator of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Adropin is identified to be accompanied by insulin sensitivity, and lipid metabolism, so we aimed to investigate serum adropin levels in ED cases compared to healthy controls (HC). Methods This case control study included 50 men with ED and and control group of 25 agematched, sexually active healthy men with normal erectile function. Cases group was divided into two groups (25 each) as ED patients with and without type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Validated Arabic version of International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-5 was used to evaluate ED severity. Measurement of serum adropin was done. Results There were significant differences between the studied groups regarding serum testosterone, estradiol, and serum prolactin. Significant differences were recorded between the studied groups regarding adropin level .Mean adropin level was higher in group 3 (healthy control) in comparison to group 1 (ED with DM) & group 2(ED without DM)). Group 3 had the highest mean adropin levels, followed by Group 2, while Group 1 had the lowest. Conclusion Serum levels of adropin were relatively decreased in ED cases either with or without diabetes mellitus. Mean adropin level was higher among healthy controls, followed by ED without DM, and the least for cases ED with DM. Also, adropin could differentiate between groups 1 and 3 and between groups 2 and 3 with higher accuracy. Adropin displayed a correlation with ED severity.
