Abstract
Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the pilosebaceous units and ranks as the eighth most prevalent disease worldwide. Acne scarring is a common consequence of acne vulgaris that occurs in some patients. Different treatment modalities have been tried for treating them such as chemical peels, laser-assisted resurfacing, dermabrasion and microneedling (MN). Both Microbotox and Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) are effective, minimally invasive treatments for improving atrophic post-acne scars, often used with microneedling.
Aim: to Compare the efficacy and safety of microbotox injection versus microneedling combined with platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of atrophic post-acne scars.
Subjects and methods: The current study included twenty patients complaining of moderate to severe atrophic post-acne scars. The right side of the face was treated with microneedling with platelet rich plasma while the left side of the face treated with mesobotox injection. Patients were evaluated clinically at the baseline, after each session, end of treatment (after 4 sessions), one month after the last session, and 3 months after the last session. Quantitative Goodman and Baron's scar grading system was used for evaluating acne scars after end of session. The degree of improvement and the degree of the satisfaction of the participants between pretreatment and one month post treatment was assessed by a quartile grading scale with reporting the degree of pain and the side effects.
Results: The percent of reduction in Goodman and baron grading system was statistically significantly higher in Group1 (Microneedling). In both groups, there was high statistically significant decrease in the Goodman and baron grading system after treatment as compared to before treatment. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the patient satisfaction. In group 1, pain/burning was reported in 2 cases (10%) and in group 2, there were 3 cases (15%) with Mild deviation of angle of mouth.
Conclusion: Both microneedling combined with platelet-rich plasma and microbotox injection were shown as effective treatment modalities for atrophic post-acne scars with better improvement with microneedling with platelet-rich plasma.
