Abstract
Silymarin is a substance which was isolated in 1968 from the seeds of the milk thistle (Silybum marianum L. Gaertn), a species known in antiquity as an efficacious and medicinal plant (wagner et al., 1968). The chemical structure of silymarin has been elucidated and satisfactorily defined. Silymarin with refined techiques of chemical separation was found to be formed of three compounds which are isom-ers and have the empirical fromula C25 H22 oiq {wagner et al., 1974).
