Abstract
Infection is a major source of morbidity and mortality in patients with liver cirrhosis. In about 30% of patients, bacterial infection is present on admission or develop during hospitalisation. Early detection of bacterial infection in patients with decompensated cirrhosis remain a major challenge, where time plays a crucial role. This study was conducted aiming to find the prognostic value of PCT in the patients with liver cirrhosis presenting with sepsis. During the period from June 2021 to December 2021, 75 subjects were enrolled. 50 patients with Hepatitis-C Virus (HCV) cirrhosis with sepsis. 25 patients had compensated cirrhosis while the other 25 patients had decompensated cirrhosis. Third group of 25 healthy subjects was included as a control group. In conclusion, Sepsis in patients with liver cirrhosis showed higher risk of ICU admission especially in those with decompensated cirrhosis. PCT levels showed high prognostic value in identifying cirrhosis patients presenting with sepsis who are at risk of ICU admission and poor outcomes.
