Abstract
Background Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequent malignancy affecting women worldwide. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are a family of proteins that are important for the maintenance of cell homeostasis. HSPs have been overexpressed in many tumours, including BCs, lung, gastric, ovarian, endometrial and colon Aim To evaluate the relation between serum levels of HSP70 and BC in Egyptians and its impact on tumour characteristics and different histopathological types of BC. Methods This a case-control study conducted on 70 cases of newly diagnosed BC and the control group included 19 apparently healthy age and sex matched subjects. Full clinical examination was done to every subject. Laboratory investigations included tumour markers (AFP, CEA, CA153) and biomarkers (ER, PR, HER2neu). Detection of the concentration of HSP70 was done using ELISA technique. Results There was a significant elevation of HSP in BC cases compared to control group. As regards lymph node metastasis status, HSP revealed significant elevation in cases with lymph node metastasis compared to cases without. Also, cases with higher tumour size ≥5cm had significantly increased HSP levels compared to cases with small tumour size
