Abstract
Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting 2.5% of the worldwide population. Troponin I levels are accompanied by cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in psoriatic cases. So, this study was conducted to detect serum levels of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (HScTnI) in psoriasis vulgaris (PV) cases compared to healthy controls. Methods: This case-control study included 40 cases with PV and 40 healthy subjects as a control group. Disease severity evaluation was conducted by using the psoriasis area severity index (PASI) score to classify the cases into groups according to severity. Measurement of HScTnI levels was conducted. Results: Mean HsCTn I level showed non-significant difference between both groups (p=0.817). There was no significant difference between the cases with different disease severity of psoriasis regarding the level of HsCTn I. There was significant strong positive correlation between HsCTn I level with disease duration (rs=0.382, p=0.015). Level of HsCTn I was significantly increased in cases with smoking, DM, HTN, present history of lipid lowering drugs and family history of cardiac disease as compared to cases with absence of these comorbidities. Conclusion: Serum level of HsCTnI showed no correlation with severity of psoriasis and a strong positive correlation with disease duration in those patients. However, in cases with psoriasis, the presence of risk factors and comorbidities (smoking, DM, HTN, present history of lipid-lowering drugs, and family history of cardiac disease) was associated with an increased level of HsCTnI.
